HISTORY
The original Halekulani began in 1907 as a residential hotel called Hau Tree owned by Robert Lewers.  It consisted of a beachfront home and five bungalows.

In 1917, Juliet and Clifford Kimball purchased the hotel, gradually expanded it and established it as a stylish resort for wealthy vacationers and named it Halekulani, which means “House Befitting Heaven.”

In the 1930s, they tore down the old Lewers home and replaced it with a plantation mansion-styled Main Building with a high-pitched hip roof to catch the cooling trade winds. Also known as the “Dickey” roof, it is a trademark of Hawaii’s legendary architect C.W. Dickey.

Following the Kimballs’ passing, the Norton Clap family of Seattle bought Halekulani in 1962 with its Main Building and 37 one- and two-story bungalows and sold it in 1981 to Mitsui Fudosan(USA), Inc. which formed the Honolulu-based Halekulani Corporation.  The hotel was then closed and the aging bungalows demolished.

Today, the historic Main Building has been restored and retained along with coconut palms and a century-old Kiawe tree in the 453-room Halekulani.
