Discover the best of Hawaiian music at Mele Mei

Mele Mei (meaning songs of May) is statewide festival of Hawaiian music. Musical performances and hula events are held throughout the month at various hotels, performance venues and on the beach, providing local and visiting music lovers with the opportunity to hear exceptional ukulele, steel guitar, traditional Hawaiian music, slack key, island reggae and rock.

For generations, Halekulani has welcomed local musicians and hula dancers. As guests enjoy cocktails under the centuries-old kiawe tree at House Without A Key, some of the best performers have captivated audiences with beautiful Hawaiian music. We’re proud to continue this tradition of music, as we support the fourth annual Mele Mei, and host performances each Sunday afternoon in May from 12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at House Without A Key.

Sunday, May 4 — Waipuna
On Sunday, May 4, we welcome the duo Waipuna. Waipuna is a collaboration of two talented individuals, Kale Hannahs and Matt Sproat. Their eclectic musical backgrounds and similar taste in music led to the development of a unique sound that draws comparisons to their name, Waipuna, meaning Spring Water.

Sunday, May 11 — Kupaoa
On Sunday, May 11, we welcome Kupaoa. The combined talents of Kellen Paik and Lihau Hannahs Paik embody the name they've chosen for their musical presence, Kupaoa, meaning rich with fragrance. They infuse musical ability and charm into two sweet, rich voices to offer up an inviting blend of music that captivates the ear, as well as the heart and mind.

Sunday, May 18 — Nathan Aweau
On Sunday, May 18, we welcome Nathan Aweau. In the New York Times, Nate Chinen said, “Nathan's performance on the electric bass and acoustic guitar shows an in-depth and advanced understanding of harmony and orchestration, and his singing style is effortless”.

Sunday, May 25 — Ledward Kaapana & Mike Kaawa
The last Sunday in May, we welcome Ledward Kaapana & Mike Kaawa to House Without A Key. Ledward Kaapana has been delighting audiences for more than 40 years. His mastery of stringed instruments, particularly slack key guitar, and his extraordinary baritone and leo ki`eki`e (falsetto) voices, have made him a musical legend. Ledward is joined by Mike Kaawa, one of Hawaii’s finest 12-string guitar players. Mike describes his music as “Hawaiian with attitude”. He entertains audiences with his stage presence and vocal abilities, strong instrumentation and distinct vocal expressions.
