We are thrilled to announce the newest exhibit at the Halekulani Gallery, titled “Tadashi Sato – Reflections.” This mini-retrospective features the works from Maui-born artist Tadashi Sato, sourced from private collections in Honolulu.

Tadashi Sato’s artistic journey was profoundly influenced by his time in New York and his interactions with artists Ralston Crawford and Stuart Davis. His work evolved from the hard-edged abstractions of Precisionism and Cubism to ethereal impressions inspired by Hawaii’s soft and colorful hues and natural beauty. Prior to the reopening of Halekulani in 1983, Sato was commissioned to create most of the bespoke abstract paintings that can be seen throughout our hotel, reflecting our legacy. It was recently discovered that he was employed at Halekulani in the late 1940s.

As a founding member of Metcalf Chateau (aka “The Group of Seven”), a group of Asian American artists with ties to Honolulu, Sato’s works are part of the permanent collections of prestigious institutions including the Whitney Museum, Guggenheim, Smithsonian, Vilcek Foundation, Honolulu Museum of Art, and Capitol Modern (formerly known as the Hawaii State Art Museum).

The gallery is open from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm daily
