Groundwork

Halekulani is pleased to present Groundwork, a limited exhibition by Honolulu-based artist Nicole Parente-Lopez. Working with volcanic stone, her practice is rooted in sustained attention, careful observation, and presence, exploring the relationships between material, form, and perception.

In her charcoal drawings, Parente-Lopez returns repeatedly to a single form, allowing each drawing to evolve beyond its initial appearance. Groundwork brings together twelve of the earliest works in this ongoing series, alongside Holding, Still, a human-scale piece that expands the same focused inquiry into a larger space.

Inspired by Hawaiian volcanic stone, her work reflects a fascination with matter as something alive, active, and continually becoming. Through careful study and refined mark-making, Parente-Lopez reveals meaning in landscapes and forms that are often overlooked, inviting viewers into a deeper experience of observation and presence.
