Nanea i ka Hulu

We are pleased to share that a new exhibit, Nanea i ka Hulu, is now open at the Halekulani Art Gallery, featuring the work of Native Hawaiian feather artist Enoka Phillips.

Born in Lahaina, Maui, and now living and working in Waiʻanae, Oʻahu, Phillips practices lei hulu, the traditional art of Hawaiian featherwork – an art form historically reserved for aliʻi and deeply connected to genealogy, spiritual protection, and the natural world. He trained under esteemed master practitioners Florence Makekau, Susie Uwēkoʻolani, and Pattie Gomez, and his work reflects a lineage grounded in technical rigor, cultural responsibility, and ʻike kupuna (ancestral knowledge).

Phillips approaches featherwork as a living, evolving practice. Drawing from ancestral techniques while embracing contemporary presentation, his work invites reflection and reimagines how we see. Each piece embodies a relationship between maker, land, and lineage, honoring the mana held within every feather. “Each feather carries its own mana, an energy connecting the natural world to the hands of the maker and the heart of the wearer,” Phillips explains. “This sacred energy is at the center of my work, reminding us of our place within the vast flow of life and culture.” Phillips’s work goes beyond preservation; it also embodies innovation. By blending traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics, he invites new audiences to experience Hawaiian culture in fresh and meaningful ways. His pieces act as bridges, linking time-honored forms to modern interpretations that resonate within today’s global art scene. This blending affirms that Hawaiian artistry is not a relic of the past, but a living, evolving expression of identity.

Through his making, teaching, and exhibitions, Phillips affirms the resilience and continuity of Hawaiian feather traditions, ensuring this sacred practice continues to thrive for future generations.
