At Halekulani, sustainability extends beyond environmental responsibility. Guided by the Hawaiian value of mālama, to care for and protect, we are committed to preserving Hawaiʻi’s natural resources, supporting local communities, and creating meaningful opportunities for cultural connection.

Through responsible operations, community partnerships, conservation initiatives, and guest experiences, we strive to ensure that the beauty, culture, and spirit of Hawaiʻi endure for generations to come.

The “For You, Everything” program, which was started in 1998, allows ours guests access to cultural venues such as the Bishop Museum, Honolulu Museum of Art, Iolani Palace, Manoa Heritage Center, Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, and the Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design to learn more about Hawaii’s rich history and culture.

SpaHalekulani was the first spa in Hawaii to be part of the Green Circle Salon organization which reuses, repurposes, and recycles all of its waste. Our corporate sponsorship with the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative allows guests to restore the integrity and biodiversity of Hawaii’s endemic forests. Halekulani and Halepuna Waikiki are the first hotels to implement wooden key cards in Waikiki. Halekulani and Halepuna Waikiki first received the Hawaii Green Business Certification in 2024 and continues to focus on finding new sustainable solutions each year.

Purchasing Reused Products & Locally Produced

SpaHalekulani is proud to be the first spa in Hawaiʻi to partner with Green Circle Salons, extending our commitment to wellbeing beyond our guests to the environment we share.

Up to 95% of salon waste can be recovered through the Green Circle program
Hair, metals, plastics, color materials and other salon waste are separated for responsible recovery
Recovered materials are repurposed rather than sent to landfill

Paperless transactions reduce paper consumption
Weightless Pedicures require little to no water
SpaHalekulani uses 100% essential oils in place of fragrance oils
Massage oils and body scrubs are farmed and packaged in Hawaiʻi, supporting local sourcing and reducing transportation-related emissions
The Spa Boutique features Made in Hawaiʻi products, including Sea Salts of Hawaiʻi Deep Ocean Magnesium, supporting local businesses committed to environmental stewardship
Post-treatment tea service features locally grown herbal teas

Reducing Waste & Reuse

Bulk-dispensed bath amenities reduce individual packaging, with less commonly used amenities available upon request
Reusable wooden key cards replace traditional plastic room keys
Bottles, cans and other materials are separated for recycling throughout the property
Reusable cloth laundry bags are provided in place of plastic
Usable linens, uniforms and amenities are donated to local organizations rather than discarded
Cloth napkins and refillable containers are used in place of disposable alternatives
Halekulani works with vendors to minimize packaging and prioritize reusable or recyclable options
Styrofoam is not purchased, and incoming packing materials are reused whenever possible

Responsible Resort Practices

Pool amenities are prepared in-house, eliminating unnecessary individual packaging
Water refill stations are available at the pool
Catering and banquet events use reusable china rather than disposable serviceware
Laundry and Housekeeping incorporate biodegradable products and reusable alternatives where possible
Laundry detergents with little or no phosphates and environmentally responsible garment-cleaning methods help reduce environmental impact
Cleaning products, paints, solvents and pest-control products are evaluated with an emphasis on safer alternatives
Integrated pest management practices help reduce reliance on chemical pesticides
Garbage liners made with recycled plastic help reduce the need for newly produced plastic.

Food Service

Local produce is sourced before mainland alternatives whenever possible.

Our chefs prioritize free-range, organic and natural products that are ethically raised without added hormones and antibiotics.

Excess pre-consumer food is diverted for animal feed, while other unused food is composted rather than entering the waste stream.

Energy Efficiency

Occupancy sensors are installed to control Air-conditioning and lighting systems for the property

ENERGY STAR equipment is used whenever possible

LED and other energy-efficient lighting systems are used to further reduce energy consumption.

Water Conservation

Low-flow showerheads in all guest rooms help conserve water without compromising comfort.

Our optional linen program allows guests to reduce laundering during their stay.

Weightless Pedicures at SpaHalekulani require little to no water.

Behind the scenes, water-saving measures include high-efficiency kitchen fixtures and routine leak monitoring.

Environmental

Reef-safe sunscreen is provided at the pool, with compostable containers used for distribution.

Native Hawaiian and drought-tolerant plants are incorporated throughout the property landscape, supporting conservation while reducing water needs.

Halekulani’s gardens celebrate plants with ecological and cultural significance, connecting guests to Hawaiʻi’s living landscape.

Volunteer with Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi

Join us in giving back to the land through our community partnership with Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi, a local organization working to restore traditional Hawaiian agriculture in the He‘eia wetlands. Guests are invited to participate in volunteer workdays, where you’ll learn about native farming practices, help care for kalo (taro), and connect with the cultural and ecological history of this special place.

Visit Mānoa Heritage Center

Nestled in the Manoa Valley, Manoa Heritage Center is a 3.5-acre living classroom dedicated to promoting the understanding of Hawaii’s natural and cultural heritage. Featuring Kūkaʻōʻō Heiau, the last intact heiau (ancient temple) in the greater ahupuaʻa (land division) of Waikiki, as well as one of Oahu’s most diverse collections of native Hawaiian plants and garden of Polynesian-introduced plants (also known as canoe plants).
