Coral Blossom by JOHN KOGA (1964) is one of the four original oil paintings commissioned by Halekulani made especially to be displayed on the walls of our rooms and suites. Nebulas of color emerge out of shades of white, outlining an edge with a likeness to the curves of a Richard Serra sculpture. As a sculptor himself, Koga transfers his three dimensional understanding of space onto a two dimensional plane where he captures our attention with an intentionally cropped image for enigmatic results. The composition tells a story- but not the full story, and what is left unsaid in the negative space alludes to something bigger which we may only be able to discover within our imagination.
